Brazilian Sony slideshow presentation image hints that new portable will offer Internet phone service through Microsoft's recent acquisition.

Source: An image posted at GameGeneration, reportedly stemming from a Sony Key Account Meeting presentation given in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

What we heard: Though Sony competitor Microsoft recently purchased Skype for $8.5 billion and plans to incorporate it into Xbox Live, that might not stop the Japanese technology giant from offering Skype functionality for its newest portable, the PlayStation Vita.

Is Skype coming to the Vita? Image credit: GameGeneration.
An image from a Sony presentation given in the Brazilian city shows a range of logos, including ones for the PlayStation Network and Wi-Fi. Another company logo is shown, and it is for big-time Internet calling service Skype.

During Sony's E3 2011 media briefing, the company named its portable the Vita (formerly known as the NGP) and announced prices for the Wi-Fi and 3G models, but it did not say anything about Skype compatibility. However, the Vita's predecessor--the PSP--does offer Skype support.

Skype is the leading provider in the consumer voice over IP space, with 170 million users worldwide. Services include free standard and video calls between Skype users on home computers, the ability to call any phone number from Skype for a fee, and the ability to generate a phone number that can be reached from a standard phone.

The official story: As of press time, neither Sony nor Microsoft has responded to GameSpot's requests for comment or clarification on the matter.

Bogus or not bogus?: Looking not bogus. Given that the original PSP supported Skype, it would stand to reason that Sony would want to continue offering that functionality to its users. Further, when Microsoft purchased Skype, it said it would continue to "invest in and support Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms," which could potentially include the Vita.

House of Mario's share price drops another 4.6 percent two days after new console is announced.

LOS ANGELES--Investors are not giving the Wii U a vote of confidence. Two days after the new console was unveiled at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, Nintendo's stock continued a two-day slide on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Today, the company's share price shed another 4.6 percent of its value, ending trading at ¥16,160 ($201.21).

Nintendo's share price is taking a beating following the Wii U unveiling.
The continued decline comes in the face of increased third-party support for the Wii U. Last night, Nintendo and Ubisoft held a joint press event at which the latter publisher announced it had five titles in development for the console. It showed off two of them: Killer Freaks From Outer Space, which will use the Wii U controller's screen as a gun sight, and Ghost Recon Online, which will have its own "always on" social network. The French publisher is also developing Assassin's Creed and Raving Rabbids titles for the console, as well as an unnamed sports game.

Ubisoft isn't the only third party supporting the Wii U. Activision, Electronic Arts, Tecmo Koei, Namco Bandai, THQ, and Warner Bros. have all publicly rallied behind the console. Games confirmed for the platform include Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge, a new Tekken, Darksiders II (at launch), and Batman: Arkham City.

British developer latest gaming firm to admit loss of players' personal info; names, addresses, phone numbers and gamertags all compromised.

In recent weeks Nintendo and Eidos Montreal have joined Sony in the ranks of those games firms who have had security problems, and now British developer Codemasters has joined the club. The firm today confirmed that it detected an "intrusion" last Friday, June 3, and had since determined that user data had been compromised.

Snow isn't the only hazard awaiting Dirt 3's players.
According to Codemaster, the compromised data belonged to users of the publisher's corporate website, the Dirt 3 VIP code redemption page, and the Codemasters eStore. Personal data including names, addresses, dates of birth, gamertags and encrypted passwords were all accessed, according to the developer.

This is the second problem to best the Dirt 3 VIP codes, the firm's first attempt to battle the used-game market by bundling single-use codes to unlock certain features with new copies of the game. PlayStation 3 owners had previously not been able to redeem their codes thanks to the PSN store being down, and thus could not gain the in-game benefits associated with it.

Codemasters apologised for the incident, saying it was "the latest victim in on-going targeted attacks against numerous game companies." The developer also said it was "doing everything within our legal means to track down the perpetrators and take action to the full extent of the law."

New York Times reports three men await formal charges in connection with personal data theft from PlayStation 3's online infrastructure.

In April, hackers broke into Sony's online network, gaining access to the personal information and passwords of some 77 million PSN and Qriosity accounts. The attacks were believed to have been conducted by Anonymous, a decentralized group of hackers who it turns out might not be as unknown as their name suggests.

The hackers might not have been as anonymous as previously thought.
According to the New York Times, Spanish police today confirmed that they apprehended three men in connection with the Sony security breach. The police believe they were involved not only with the attacks on Sony, but with other strikes against government websites the world over, and characterized the trio as the local heads of Anonymous.

The three men--all in their early 30s--were apprehended in Almeria, Barcelona, and Valencia, and released pending formal charges. According to the paper, the expected charges will be forming an illegal association to attack public and corporate websites, with each facing a prison sentence of up to three years.

The PSN outage first began on April 20, when Sony brought down the service ostensibly for just a few days. It wasn't until mid-May that the gaming company began restoring PSN functionality.

On June 1, Sony restored service to the PlayStation Store, giving gamers the chance to once again engage in digital commerce through the online platform, with full restoration achieved earlier this week. Sony has also begun offering a selection of free games and other perks for affected PS3 and PSP users to make up for the outage. According to a financial report by Sony, the attack is expected to cost the company more than $171 million.

uncharted 3:E3 preview

All of Naughty Dog has been looking forward to tonight ever since we announced Uncharted 3 with Entertainment Weekly and showed it for the first time at the SPIKE VGA show back in December. And just a few minutes ago, if you were watching the SCEA Press Conference on any of the live streams, you go to see what we’ve been working so hard to be able to show you!
At the SCEA Press Conference, our Co-Presidents, Evan and Christophe, took the stage and with just a short intro, launched into the first live demo of Uncharted 3 ever shown publicly. The brief Cruise Ship sequence shows just a small slice of one of the most challenging scenarios we’ve concocted for any of the Uncharted games – as a massive, moving environment of the Cruise Ship gets turned on its side mid-battle, Drake has to scramble for his life. This sequence showcases the next level of our physics and water technology – and you’ll see video of this sequence later this week.
The Cruise Ship isn’t everything we’ve got up our sleeves – Naughty Dog is bringing more content to E3 2011 than we ever have before. We’ve also brought a ton of PS3 systems all hooked up with a massive chunk of the Uncharted 3 competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes – those are all on the floor of the SCEA booth for all E3 attendees to check it out. Do drop by!
Speaking of multiplayer, at the SCEA Press Conference, Christophe announced that PlayStation and SUBWAY struck a partnership that will allow Uncharted fans throughout the United States early access to the COMPLETE Uncharted 3 competitive multiplayer experience. This partnership starts in October and we’ll be sure to keep you updated with more details later on this year.
We’ve also prepared what I think is one of our best trailers to date of any of the Uncharted games. Check out the Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception E3 2011 trailer above!
One more thing, if you happen to come by the SCEA booth this week, we’ve giving out a limited number of E3 exclusive Uncharted 3 t-shirts! The awesome t-shirt design was created by the excellent Cory Schmitz and this is the only time you’ll be able to grab a t-shirt with this design on it. Each t-shirt will also come with a very special, very limited PSN voucher code good for one of three Uncharted 3 in-game items once the game ships in November:
The t-shirt design on a torso item for your customizable multiplayer character
Mystery Skinned Weapon #3
Mystery Skinned Weapon #4
I’m also going to be attending several of the reader meetups and events throughout the week and I’ll be bringing a few t-shirts and codes with me – keep an eye on the Naughty Dog Twitter to see where I’m headed.
If you remember, we handed out t-shirts and codes just like these back at PAX East and they were extremely popular, to say the least. If you can’t make it out to E3 this year, don’t fret!
Have a great E3 everyone – I’m looking forward to a crazy, yet awesome week working the show floor!

playstation vita

Just moments ago during our 2011 E3 press conference we proudly unveiled an incredible 2011 software lineup and amazing new PS3 peripherals, and also shed new light on our highly anticipated handheld gaming device, officially named PlayStation Vita (PS Vita). “Vita,” which means “Life” in Latin, was chosen as the name for our next-generation portable entertainment system because it enables a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context.
By blurring the lines between interactive entertainment and reality, our goal was to design a device that offered a revolutionary combination of rich gaming capabilities and social connectivity, bringing users closer to each other and closer to their gaming experiences wherever they are. Connectivity was a key objective and our goal was to create experiences and content that would challenge the traditional notions of gaming. It was vital to make a device that was an extension of a user’s entertainment world, no matter where one would go.

GPT: "Activision showed off some great footage of the upcoming Modern Warfare 3 to open up the Microsoft Press Conference. Looks like this one is shaping up to be another hit. What do you think based on what you've seen so far?"

Microsoft opened its E3 2011 press conference with an exclusive demonstration of the forthcoming Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, in a move that was clearly strategically planned to appeal the hardcore gaming crowd.
The new COD game has a release date of November 8 later this year, Microsoft announced, quickly giving most of the crowd and online viewers the key piece of gaming news that they all wanted to hear.
Big guns, explosions, action!
Amidst deep see divers burning their way through grates and dead bodies floating by the ocean-based battle, the action in the game looks incredible, as we have come to expect from Activision's killer franchise.
Developers at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games noted how they were honoured to work together, with a Sledgehammer rep saying it was "truly humbling to be part of this game.
And so, E3 2011 kicks off, with explosions and big guns on show from Microsoft, with Xbox boss Don Mattrick taking to the stage to announce:"This is an incredible time for everyone who loves games and entertainment."
Stay tuned for further gaming tech news and updates from LA as they come

call of duty modern warfare 3

Although the details of the new Call of Duty MW3 game have not yet been released, Call of Duty MW3 is expected to continue with the same modern combat situations that gamers have enjoyed in the earlier MW 1 and MW 2 games. Call of Duty MW3 is expected to feature the same high quality graphics as MW2, rather than being based on the same graphics systems as the Call of Duty Black Ops game, which was released last year. This should mean that Call of Duty MW3 will avoid the graphics issues that have afflicted the Black Ops game and led to complaints from gamers about its cartoon-like qualities. Call of Duty MW3 will be using the same graphics engine as MW2.
